Training Toolkit on Disaster Risk Management
Building Resilience
How we acquire knowledge, how we understand the world
How we access information, and who organizes that information for us
Narratives form in the process of collecting knowledge
One story can be told in many ways
Universal values are lived through the diversity of their interpretations.
We may take for granted the availability of old manuscripts, historical records, heritage objects and their capacity to inform us in the digital age. Yet the accumulation of documented knowledge remains an invaluable form of cultural and social wealth, and globally it is at risk.
Building Resilience is a UNESCO training toolkit designed to provide technical guidance on the management of archives and documentary heritage in the event of a disaster (natural or man-made) and includes case studies from Asia-Pacific. With the growing impact of climate change and conflict situations, UN efforts are increasingly directed toward disaster preparedness and while this publication is designed for librarians, archivists, museum and heritage professionals, it can also be used by anyone who owns smaller collections, e.g. galleries, family archives.
The toolkit is available as an open access resource on the UNESDOC portal.
